A Bird Watchers’ Diary, Part Five
19 May, 2008This time, we spotted new bird species in our favourite park and in Alsace, France, in the Rhine/la Sauer area. Here they are:
Black Kite (Schwarzmilan, Črni škarnik, Milvus migrans) - a water-loving bird of prey. Our had a problem with an angry crow …
Common Tern (Fluss-Seeschwalbe, Navadna čigra, Sterna hirundo) - a very beautiful bird, called sea swallow here.
Coot (Blässhuhn, Črna liska, Fulica atra) - ours were making love on the water. In a threesome, mind you.
Egyptian Goose (Nilgans, Egiptovska gos, Alopochen aegyptiacus) - an interesting sight: a pair of beautiful geese attacked by a swan …
Great Cormorant (Kormoran, Veliki kormoran, Phalacrocorax carbo) - we couldn’t really believe we saw it. Funny swimming style, it has.
Grey Heron (Graureiher, Siva čaplja, Ardea cinerea) - an elegant grey bird, very common in our part of the world. I hope I will catch it with my camera one day.
Hobby (Baumfalke, Škrjančar, Falco subbuteo) - a beautiful falcon, just loving those dragonflies …
Nuthatch (Kleiber, brglez, Sitta europaea) - it can climb downwards, surely a useful ability.
Starling (Star, Škorec, Sturnus vulgaris) - one of the most numerous birds in our part of the world. To be observed in great numbers from our balcony.

(Fulica atra)

(Alopochen aegyptiacus)
